Barrhaven was established in 1960 as part of a new suburban development spread through the Greenbelt National Capital. Mel Barr owned the area at the time and was chosen to develop the land that was later named after him. Barrhaven is affectionately called Far Haven or The Haven because of its location so far south in the city. Over three quarters of the residents of Barrhaven are English speaking with a very small population speaking French or another language. Barrhaven is split into many smaller neighbourhoods including Pheasant Run, Knollsbrook, Cedargrove, Heritage Park, Longfields, Heart's Desire, Stonebridge, and Half Moon Bay.

There are many opportunities for the residents of Barrhaven to relax and enjoy themselves. Baseball diamonds, basketball courts, outdoor rinks, play structures, a tennis court, sledding hills, sports fields,a skateboard park, and an impressive five splash pads are all available. Tree planting, movies in the park, Winter in Barrhaven and a Canada Day Celebration complete with a midway are all part of the fun events hosted in the community. There are also many restaurants and bars in the neighbourhood for the residents to enjoy.
Barrhaven is always looking for ways to improve and become safer. They are currently working with the city on plans for new subdivisions and condos in the neighbourhood. In July 2014 the construction of a new roundabout took place at the intersection of Berrigan Drive and Longfields Drive. Finally, the Minto Recreation Centre is scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2014 and will include two NHL sized rinks, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a weight and cardio room and multipurpose rooms.
