Ottawa General Hospital and Alta Vista are located below the Rideau River on the south side of the city of Ottawa. The Alta Vista part of the neighbourhood was named after the elevation in the neighbourhood that sits on the rise above the Rideau River Valley. The rest of the neighbourhood was primarily farmland until the 1950's when it was developed to answer to the post war baby boom. Alta Vista is home to more mid to high income households while the rest of the neighbourhood is home to low to mid income households. Both the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and The Ottawa Hospital's General and Riverside Campuses are part in the community. The population is mainly English speaking but there is a little less than a quarter of the population that speak French.
Ottawa General Hospital-Alta Vista have many recreational opportunities available to their residents. There are baseball diamonds, basketball courts, tennis courts, a volleyball court, sports fields, play structures, outdoor wading pools, outdoor rinks, a splash pad, and a sledding hill available for the residents enjoyment. Lynda Lane Park, Kilborn Park-Grasshopper Hill , and Orlando Park stretch across the community in one continuous park giving residents access to lots of open park space.
