Stittsville

< Ottawa Neighbourhood Guide

Stittsville's first settlers arrived in 1820 but the town was not established until 1850 by Jackson Stitts. The town was originally located near present day Hazeldean and Carp Roads but after a fire in 1870 it was moved further south closer to the railway. Stittsville officially became a village in 1961 and became amalgamated into the city in 2001 like many other communities in Ottawa. While Stittsville is a part of the greater Ottawa City it still retains its close knit, village character that encourages neighbours to get to know each other and be involved in each others lives and the life of the community. Most of Stittsville's residents speak English mainly but approximately seven percent speak French as their primary language.
